Apple A16 Bionic
Apple A16 Bionic is a hexa-core chipset that was announced on September 7, 2022, and is manufactured using 4nm process technology. It has 2 Avalanche cores at 3200MHz and 4 Blizzard cores at 1800MHz.
The latest A16 Bionic chipset powers the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro models and the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max.
While there have been speculations that the A16 will be built on the same 5nm process as the A15's system-on-chip feature in iPhone 13 models, we now know that the A16 Bionic will actually be built on a 4nm architecture.
If you're considering an iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max, this is great news in terms of performance, as the smaller design will allow for more transistors (16 billion total), making the A16 faster and more efficient than its predecessor.
The new processor repeats many parts of the basic design of the previous model, featuring a hexa-core CPU with two performance cores and four efficiency cores. However, while Apple A15 Bionic It was (and still is) really fast, the Apple A16 Bionic is up to 40% faster than competitors like the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, all while consuming 20% less power than its predecessor.
The A16 Bionic will also have a five-core GPU, just like the A15. However, the bandwidth between the GPU and the CPU has been increased by 50%.
This allows the two CPUs to communicate better with each other by increasing the data that can flow through the processor, giving your phone a performance benefit when using graphics-intensive apps and games, especially at the high refresh rates of 120Hz Pro and Pro Max.
The A16 also features a 16-core Neural Engine, just like its predecessor, which Apple promises can handle about 17 trillion operations per second and 4 trillion operations per image.
This essentially augments the machine learning and artificial intelligence capabilities of the Apple A16 Bionic, and along with the upgraded imaging processor, will primarily take advantage of automatic image optimization from the 48MP sensor that Apple introduced in the Apple iPhone 14 Pro.
