Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Processor – Octa-core chipset Announced May 20, 2022, manufactured using 4nm process technology. It has 1 Cortex-X2 core at 3000MHz, 3 Cortex-A710 cores at 2500MHz and 4 Cortex-A510 cores at 1800MHz.
The processor comes as the ninth annual flagship release of the flagship Snapdragon series smartphone platform.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 features Qualcomm's first Armv9 CPU cores, an enhanced 18-bit Triple Image Signal Processor (ISP), and better than ever Machine Learning (ML) capabilities.
The processor is powered by a single powerful Cortex-X2 CPU core clocked at 3GHz over last year, a large 2.5GHz Cortex-A710 core, and four 1.8GHz Cortex-A510 power-saving cores GHz is more modest.
Qualcomm sticks to the tried-and-tested 1+3+4 3-cluster CPU arrangement instead of the experimental 2+2+4 set up in Google Tensor.
Qualcomm says it's looking to improve performance by 20% and save energy by 30% compared to the previous generation CPU setup in the (Snapdragon 888).
Qualcomm has paired the Cortex-X2 with 1MB of L2 cache and there is 512KB of cache for all the A710 cores.
This is the same cache setting as last year, which probably explains the performance target being a bit below Arm's maximum claims for the X2. However, there is a much larger 6MB L3 cache, compared to 4MB in the previous generation, which will definitely help keep these new cores fed.
